He is NOT black!!

"He is not black...He is an Afro-Asian-European-Latin...that's an all-American President."
- Andrew Young on The Colbert Report Nov 5, 2008

At 11:00 pm EST last nigh, Wolf Blitzer announced, based on CNN's projection, the new President of America - Barack Obama. Almost instantly led by all major media channels, the entire country was deluged with a jubilation of celebrations for the first black President of the United States. While NY Times can't wait to extol the fall of "racial barrier", all these to me, sadly, is exactly the self-evidence of an underlying actuality - men are still judged by the color of their skin in this country.

McCain, Unpresidential But Genuine

McCain made his most recent SNL appearance right before the presidential deadline. I almost felt sorry that I didn't bother to spend some time trying to know more about this guy until very late of the campaign - well, not that it would have make any differences, after all I can't vote anyway; plus, I think in terms of campaign policies, Obama has much better solutions to many key issue.

Just last night, I was watching CNN's documentary for both candidates, and the republican veteran stroke me to be somehow more real, lively, and empathetic. Going through his life story on the screen, I realized that this guy has quite some admirable human qualities that have been catastrophically downplayed by his campaign. He is brave, patriotic, passionate, faithful, unyielding, and ingenuous. I am somehow convinced that politics is more like a dream instead of profession to him, which could be precisely the reason that he can't win this campaign. No matter how the election turns out to be, I wish him well.

This Year's Halloween Thrillers...

I was convinced that this year's October 31 must be completely divorced from any Halloween spirit. I mean just look around, what can be more frightening than what we have undergone for the past a few weeks? From Hurricane Ike to Wall Street breakdown, from $700 billion bailout to historical stock market plunge, from socialism to communism, I was pretty confident that no other haunted house stories or zombie movies can top what we have got so far - until I saw this:

Exxon Profit Rises, Tops Estimates, After Oil Surges

Chevron Profit Doubles After Oil Tops $147 a Barrel

THAT scared the shit out of me. I can't help but wondering after reading this how could possibly anyone sitting in this global-wise inflaming financial poop still claim to be "an undecided" for Tuesday's election?

Why Safe Is Good?

After the 30-min Obamercial pinned down with a jaw-dropping $3.5 million spending, of course all the TV pundits couldn't wait to weigh in. From Countdown to AC 360, zealous discussions were held on Obama's costly pitch. It seems strange to me, though, that most people feel the presidential candidate's major achievement from this 30 minutes is to reassure the Americans that he is safe.

Since when "safe" has become a presidential virtue in this country that values innovativeness and individuality to the point where "safe" is almost synonymous with "boring" and "stagnant"? Is it really the quality ought to be bragged about with a 7-digit informercial of someone who has spent the past 20 months trying to convince people that he is about to bring "change" to the country?

On the other hand, what seems even more puzzling is that while attacking Obama for being "unsafe" or "risky" by pegging him with every possible damaging association, McCain prides himself and his running mate on being "maverick" - the exact opposite of "safe". Is it me or presidential campaigns are never good for logical analysis?

Democracy Is Overrated

I had an exchange of thoughts on democracy with a friend a couple of days ago, which is a very rare thing for me to do. It was not intentional for the conversation to go political. We were sitting in a casual Greek restaurant in west village and having light beer with meze since it was still early in the evening. We started off by talking about random things - summer, school, work, nosy coworkers, bitchy boss, etc. The conversation somehow made an unexpected turn when we began talking about families. My friend said he sometimes found it uncomfortable talking about things to his family. "Like what?" I asked. "Well, like...politics." He answered with a noticeable pause. Then, after making a cautious glance around the dining room, he asked me in a lowered voice,"What do you think about democracy?"

Though caught a little off guarded, I instantly answered, "Democracy is overrated." Immediately, I was shocked at my own words. Even before I could recap what just came out of my mouth, I heard my friend, almost with a relief, saying, "That's exactly what I think." We didn't dwell on the subject for too long. The night ended up with talks over many other more pleasant and less touchy things. But on my way home, I couldn't help but wondering exactly what had made me say such things.

Given where I am from, I've learned to be skeptical about just everything. But never once did I question the validity of democracy. It is the ultimate motto that everyone praises to be a panacea for any sort of problem we are facing. My father, whose experience has a huge impact on my world view, has taken in democracy as a mission in his quest for political recognition even after loosing his position in government. It was not until recently did I start thinking just how much faith we should have in democracy.

"All men are born equal" is probably the most resounding phrase in political doctrine of modern societies. It's been regarded as the fundamental principle of democracy. Though I don't have a problem with the statement itself, I find it challenging to assume the continuity of such equality. When I walk around hearing people saying stupid things all the time, I can't help but wondering which one is worse, unconditioned democratism or autocratic totalitarian? Maybe these two are just equally bad.

It's certainly a bitter year for many self-claimed democratic administrations. While Bush's maneuvering of the world's No. 1 country of the past 8 years has become a target of fervent attacks from not only his political opponent but also members of his own party, on the other side of the earth, Taiwan suffers from its biggest political scandal featuring former president Chen Shuibian. I can clearly recall many years ago a friend from Taiwan said to me rather boastfully after the very controversial election, "Taiwan has now advanced to a true democratic society ." I didn't say anything at that time, but now I would probably be able to reply with an evil grin, "Well, we'll see."

In no way defending despotism, I simply don't believe unconditioned democracy is any better in terms of governing a country. Just look at the on going presidential campaign, how far is it from a popularity contest, say American Idol?

OK, this is probably the hottest creature on this planet right now. No matter how ridiculous it seems, the speculation whether this guy is from earth won't cease.

Aha, it's IKEA!~

I have to say when it comes to flexibility, no one beats IKEA. I had spent months looking for furnitures that fit my particular remodeling requests, but eventually I found almost everything I needed from IKEA.

Once the stairs were relocated, there was a 11"x24" recess in the wall which I decided to use as a broom closet. The problem was to find an appropriate door for the closet. There was nothing in Home Depot or Lowe's that I could use to cover the 78"x20" opening. My contractor suggested to get a Louvered Bi-fold door and cut it to fit, but I knew I would hate that look to the very deep core of my being. Then IKEA came to the rescue. This PAX Drammen wardrobe door is exactly what I was looking for. The tempered glass surface looks sleek and is very easy to clean. The one I got was 19 5/8"x76 3/4" which fit perfectly and cost me only $100. I also got a pair of Jigga handle to go with it. I couldn't be happier with the outcome.

A window seat was the first thing I wanted for my new home. The original window stool was about 10" deep and 54" wide , it was good to sit on, but not comfortably. So I got this LACK shelving unit from IKEA and laid it against the window horizontally and held it with four sets of Capita legs. These legs are great because they are adjustable so that the unit top levels with the window stool perfectly. In this way, not only did I get a cozy window seat with minimum cost but also a functional shelving unit.

The most problematic area of my new home was an odd triangle corner in the living room. The angle is just about 60-degree and virtually nothing can fit in there, but that's where the window with better view is located. Eventually I made the corner a study nook. I decided to put a desk in front of it so that when I sat I would be facing the view all the time. I also asked my contractor to build up a big step in there to hold my printer. For the desk, I bought the black-brown Galant corner desk with matched round extension at each end. For legs, I am using four Vika Runtorp which comes with caster so the desk can move around easily. My contractor also altered the shape of the table top so it could fit the corner better. I was a little concerned about cutting the table top, but the end result looks just fine.

A Fabulous Piece of Decor

Even though I knew it from the very deep bottom of my heart that the chance of me taking full advantage of a kitchen is as slim as G.W. Bush getting through a public speech without any mispronunciation, I was still dying for a glittering food making (or massing) stage fully equipped with top-chef class appliances. So here it is, the dazzling center piece of my home decoration - kitchen.

The entire cabinetry is from IKEA. I am mixing two series from IKEA's kitchen collection: Linjar and Abstrakt. This combination is interesting in a sense that Abstrakt is one of the best selling series in US market while Linjar is probably the worst. In fact, IKEA has decided to discontinue Linjar and sell all its current stock for half of the original price. It really surprised me. Linjar is the only IKEA cabinetry with integrated handle, its glossy surface, minimal design and vivid color compose the typical European style that has been the hottest trend in today's home renovation market. I found it hard to believe that the sales don't perform well. The only thing I can think of is the bold color which can be hard to accommodate. But to my design, Linjar is a perfect fit and I certainly didn't have any complaint about IKEA's 50% off sale (^^)v

One good thing about buying IKEA kitchen is that you can download its kitchen design program and have a visual perception of how the kitchen will look like. You can do all your design at home and upload your plan to IKEA's server and place your order at any store. It is a great tool for control freaks like me who want to be completely in charge of every detail. Here are a few images from my IKEA kitchen plan.

The back splash is my favorite. I am using 1" glass mosaic to cover the entire wall. The gradient pattern has a zippy name "Disco", perfect for its dancy rhythm and invigorating luster.

For the countertop, I spent quite some time shopping around, but eventually I decided to go with IKEA's Numerar birch. I really like the warm feeling of butchers block and IKEA's low price is just impossible to resist. The floor tile is 18" square porcelain. The light gray color echoes Linjar's handle while the matte surface keeps the glossy blue from overpowering the space.

During the renovation, I had such a hard time convincing my contractor that I would prefer appliances smaller than standard size even if that means spending more money. I don't blame him for looking at me as if my brain is flood-damaged. In a country that believes "the bigger the better", the philosophy "small is smart" doesn't fly. But to me, big means inefficient space, wasted resource, and clumsy looking. My kitchen is only about 70 sq ft, any standard American size will make the space look crampy and awkward. Instead, all my appliances are cabinet fitting. I asked my contractor to "fake" a build-in looking for the LG refrigerator to coordinate the 24" wall oven.
